A Shoushan Stone Carving of Buddha’s hand
Shoushan (寿山)stone(石)is a precious stone found and named from its source in Shou (寿 – longevity) shan(山 – mountain). Literally translated, it means the Mountain of Longevity in the northern suburbs of Fuzhou, Fujian province, P.R. China.
This piece resembles a carving of Buddha’s hand (佛手).
It is an unusually shaped citron variety whose fruit is segmented into finger-like sections. In China, the Buddha’s hand fruit is a symbol of happiness, longevity and good fortune. It is also a traditional temple offering and a New Year’s gift.
More About the Carving
The concept of good fortune 福 , prosperity 禄 and longevity 寿. It is widely used in Chinese traditional carvings. A peach (寿桃M)is carved at the very left upper corner and it resembles longevity. There is also a bat (蝠 – pronounced same as 福 – Happiness or good fortune in Chinese) located in the middle. The Buddha’s hand can also resemble wealth or prosperity due to the golden color of actual fruit.
